A high fibre diet may protect against colon cancer. Fibre occurs in fruits, vegetables, legumes (peas and beans), wholegrain cereals such as whole wheat / bran type bread, brown rice and wheat and bran cereals. 3Choose foods with Vitamins A, C, and E and Selenium. Best sources of vitamin A include foods with beta carotene such as carrots, peaches, peppers, apricots, broccoli and squash. Vitamin C can be found in lots of fresh fruits and vegetables such as grapefruit, cantaloupe, oranges, kiwi fruit, strawberries, red and green peppers, broccoli and tomatoes. Vitamin E can be found in vegetable oils, dark green leafy vegetables, legumes (peas and beans), seeds and wholegrains such as brown rice as well as eggs, organ meats and milk. Public Health Department Eat more vegetables especially the cabbage family. These include Broccoli, Cauliflower, Brussells sprouts, all cabbages and kale. Important studies have shown that these cruciferous vegetables appear to protect you against colorectal, stomach and respiratory cancers. 1 10 Stop cigarette smoking. This provides the biggest cancer risk of all. Help with smoking cessation is available from the Cayman Islands Public Health Department and the Cancer Society 9 Vitamin D and Calcium. Include low fat dairy products such as 1% milk, reduced fat cheese and yogurts for calcium. Vitamin D can be found in fish oils, liver, dairy products, eggs and oily fish. Vitamin D can also be made in the body by the action of sunlight on the skin. 8 Keep meat portions small. Limit your intake of red meat to one 3-ounce cooked serving per day. That is about the size of a deck of cards. Also, keep portions of poultry and fish moderate as the goal is to include more plant based foods in your diet. Limit your intake of meat, poultry, fish and eggs to two servings per day. Aim for good weight control. As obesity is linked with cancer, regular exercise and a lower calorie intake will promote weight loss and help you avoid gaining a lot of weight. Walking is an ideal exercise for most people but any regular exercise program will be beneficial. 7 Limit Alcohol. Evidence suggests all types of alcoholic drinks may increase your risk of a number of cancers, including cancer of the mouth, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, liver, breast, colon and rectum. It’s considered more harmful when combined with smoking. If consumed at all, limit alcoholic drinks to no more than one drink daily for women and two for men. (A serving of alcohol is considered 1½ fluid ounces of hard liquor, 5 fluid ounces of wine or 12 fluid ounces of beer.) 6 5 Consume less salt cured, smoked and nitrite cured foods. Choose bacon, ham, hot dogs or salt/smoked cured fish less often. Additional risk factors for certain types of cancer include rays from the sun, excessive x-rays, estrogens and certain harmful chemicals. Ask your doctor for more information about these. Many factors, including diet have been implicated in the cause of Cancer. However a clear picture on the way in which diet is involved in both the promotion and protection against cancer is not known. Trim fat from your diet. A high fat diet increases your risk of certain cancers. Fat loaded calories can mean excess weight gain for you, especially if you don’t exercise regularly. Cut all visible fat from meat and skin from chicken. Reduce 4 intake of fried foods and high fat foods such as mayonnaise, pastries, creamy salad dressings and puddings. Instead use low fat dairy products and boil, grill, steam, bake or stew your food in preference to frying. The HSA has provided quality healthcare to you and your family for many generations.
